I have always had a love for fine china, and as a young child I remember my mother having two very dainty demitasse coffee sets which, in my view, were wasted sitting in her display cabinet when I could use them to play tea parties (not that she ever let me). Many years later and for some inexplicable reason, I turned down the offer to keep these coffee sets when she decided to downsize house.
Despite this, the love of china was still there and I would happily browse the various department stores looking at all the beautiful pieces, however, whilst living in Harare a friend introduced me to collecting china cups and saucers, and together we would trawl the many antique shops around the city. I didn't pursue this when I moved to England and it was many years later after having an afternoon hen tea for my daughter at The Silver Teaspoon in Johannesburg that their use of mismatched china reignited my passion.
It was during the first Covid-19 lockdown, a time when people were rediscovering their love of cooking and baking and many tearooms offering takeaway afternoon teas, that I decided to share my china collection with you. I hope you will enjoy the pieces as much as I do.
